The diagnosis of Stiff man Syndrome (also called Stiff person syndrome) is based on the detection of autoantibodies which react against both of the two isoforms of Glutamate Decarboxylase (GAD I (GAD 67 kD) and GAD II (GAD 65 kD).
Anti-GAD antibodies have also been detected in patients with neurological disorders other than Stiff man Syndrome such as degenerative cerebellar ataxia, epilepsy and palatal myoclonus.
